We started off as 3 Of A Kind and are now BGF: myself (Profit), Paso, Jackpot, and G-Sosa.
Back then, everything was a dream. Now it’s become a reality.
I had an interest in music since I was a kid. In her younger days, Mama and I would listen to Boosie as he was coming up and I knew every word to almost any song.
I always knew I wanted to do music and started rapping at 11 and recording at 14. I grew up with Jack Pot and, even though we’ve been rocking since head start, we didn’t trap around each other until middle school. Pot and I would sit in the subway after school and freestyle for the rest of the day. One day in sixth grade, I heard PASO rapping through the hallway and we all started hitting the booth after that.
PASO and I used to cut up together with the rest. If you ask me, we’re all family. We surround ourselves with brotherly love and nobody gets left behind. Before rapping, we were all rocking and getting into trouble together- from football to the streets.
Even though we stayed in touch, we drifted apart as we got older. We found interest in other things and grew up. We got into trouble, dealing with the law and other situations (this was true for me) and the day after Christmas, I was returned to Rankin County Juvenile. For a week, I sat there waiting for court so I could go home. When I was in court, I saw my mother walk through the room crying. I was confused because I knew I would come home and just be on house arrest. We’d been through this process many times.
After court, before returning to get my things, I was told that my mother wanted to speak with me. She pulled me into a room, asked me to sit down, and tears fell from her eyes. She told me PASO and Chris had a car accident (a head-on collision) and that PASO had died. It all happened the night before I was released.
We all lost a brother and a piece of us that day. It brought so many of us closer and we became the BGF or Black Gorilla Family. We’d been screaming BGF before PASO’s death because we didn’t really like the name even though it was good for promotional reasons. After that, we all stuck together (most of us being related) and that’s where “family” comes from.
KJ (a.k.a Sosa has been rolling with us since a jit. KJ and I met in first grade where we got in a fight in a bathroom then acted like nothing happened the next day. KJ used to freestyle with us but never wanted to rap. He just did it for fun or to get a laugh…brother’s always been the character. He kept us all rolling and still does.
We’ve been rocking from that day forward. We either went to school together, grew up around each other, or ran the streets together. It’s more than just 3 of us now, we just do the music.
That’s how 3 Of A Kind was transformed into BGF: Myself (profit), Paso, Jackpot, and G-Sosa.
This is a piece of our story, the rest is to be witnessed, and the best is yet to come.
